Your Family Never Has to "Outgrow" A Home You Love

How to Rid Your Home of Destructive Termites

by Zack Gilbert

If you suspect that your home has termites in it, you are going to want to take quick action to get rid of them. If they are allowed to take up residence in your home for too long, you could find that you will be facing very large construction bills in your future because they will eat through everything in your home that is made of wood.

Call the Exterminator

While homeowners can try to rid their home of pests such as ants, cockroaches, or mice on their own, an infestation of termites is going to require a professional exterminator. Do not make the mistake of worrying about having to pay for an exterminator, because his or her fees are much less than having to pay a contractor to come in to replace all of the support beams in your basement after the termites are done with them. Since it can take more than one treatment from the exterminator to solve the problem, you will want to call to schedule that first appointment right away.

Clear Up Outside of the Home

You want to go outside and examine the surroundings of your home. Do you have a stack of wood sitting right next to your home? If so, you need to move it as far away from your home as possible. Wood piles are a lovely breading ground for termites since there is so much for them to eat, and with the wood being right next to the foundation of your home, it is only a matter of time before they find their way in.

Seal Up All Access Points

To help make sure that termites are not going to be able to get into your home too easy, you will want to take the time to seal up all small cracks and holes that you come across. It is important for you to remember that termites are small and can squeeze into holes or crevices much smaller than they are. You can do this yourself or have a professional contractor do it for you. If you are going to do it yourself, simply use a waterproof and durable caulking that you can apply to your foundation. Once it is dry, you can always add some paint to blend the caulking in with the rest of your foundation.

When you make use of every tip, you will have a much easier time ensuring that you are able to not only get rid of the termites but that you will not have a problem with them in the future.
